Rev. Karl F Kranz, a missionary from Germany and pastor of the Zion Evangelical Church of Madison Township which had organized in 1856, helped Zion Church organize St. Johnís Evangelical Church in 1869 using twin constitutions written in German. Services were held in the Methodist Church building in Woodland which was no longer in use. Then in 1874 the building was purchased for $175. It stood on the westernmost part of the present property. The services were conducted by the pastor of Zion Church on Sunday morning one week and Sunday afternoon the next week. In 1892 a half acre of land east of the church was purchased from Jacob Markerís farm and a new church was built on the east part at a cost of $3,057. The church bell rang on Saturday evening at 6:00 heralding the coming day of rest and Sunday services. The bell would also tell of a death with each toll representing a year in the life of the deceased. In 1919 the church was enlarged by adding a Sunday school annex and basement.

In 1934 when the Evangelical and Reformed Churches united it became St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church. In 1957 the congregation became St. John United Church of Christ when the Evangelical and Reformed Churches united with the Congregational and Christian Churches forming the United Church of Christ. In 1967 the building was again expanded and redecorated.
